Below is a good example of the sort of crap that
anyone can expect, should they decide to do any
'advertorial' writing work in Asia.  I was asked to
write 550 words.  One day later, I got a call asking
that it be reduced to 200 words!  I thought that
was the end of it.... But....only six hours later,
I was asked to reduce it to 100 words.
A soulless business...

Walk in the door, and you'll know you have just entered somewhere very different, compared to any other store. With a corner dedicated to racks of clothing, and other corners displaying ladies footwear, furniture and a small side wing currently showing off a designer German kitchen setting - Yuan Sheng is a lot more like an art gallery than a store. Yet all items - all exclusively imported - are for sale to very discerning customers. As Fashion and Footwear buyer Ophelia Zhung says, the store 'attracts those who have become very successful in life, where taste is the only consideration.' With a steady stream of visitors from China and an increasing amount of Western customers, Yuan Sheng has successfully brought the concept of high-end European shopping to Taiwan.

Business began five years ago as a kitchen and furnishings concept in the Da-An district, becoming so successful that six months ago the store relocated to Guang Hua, in order to have more room available for its emerging fashion, floristry and accessories sections. Zhung casually says, 'I need to go to Paris soon, as it's now almost fashion week'. There, among other locations like New York, Milan and Tokyo, she will 'pick up' more items for her clothing and footwear sections. Her words are really quite literal, as many of the items on display are one-of-a-kind to Taiwan… Although ordering is available, items such as paintings, dresses and some accessories - once sold - are rarely seen in Taiwan again. When it comes to furnishings, Zhung says that these are prestigious items that people use throughout the rest of their life, representing the type of workmanship and style that buyers refer to as 'classic design.'

Yuan Sheng also has its buyers travelling abroad to constantly update its kitchen, furnishings, art and floristry sections; however what may come as a surprise to many people is that the store also offers a complete home design service. Product buyers come from various design backgrounds and are very skilled in matching, blending and customizing product to the tastes or personalities of customers. Says Zhung - being a former stylist for the stars - 'I can tell straight away what sort of taste somebody has - by the way they stand, look, their hairstyle, general feeling and what clothing they are already wearing'.

Some of the designer brands that Yuan Sheng has now become associated with include Avelon, Silent, Steffie Christiaens, Miki Mialy, Damir Doma, A Friend and Dutch-Ess. For those who may be currently updating their casual wardrobe for the coming winter of 2011, Zhung notes that people are sticking to denim (as witnessed by the super tight denim shorts of this summer), with designer jeans from companies such as 'prps' already hot selling items.

As well as offering a spacious shopping environment, Yuan Sheng is proud of its relaxed atmosphere, with decorated metallic leaf walls and paintings that separate various walk-through sections. Although, for the ultimate in personalized service, design consultancy is available, the company has placed a lot of importance in creating a rush-free experience where customers can spend time browsing, in order to truly appreciate the beauty and exquisite design of items that are often too good to be simply called 'products'. At Yuan Sheng, the experience is a lot closer to 'art'.
